Welcome parents and students to 5th grade. In this class we will be integrating 21st century skills with traditional classroom learning.
Please expect a significant amount of student classwork, homework, projects and tests to be done on the internet. Please let me know if your child does not have internet access at home.
The following is a list of websites that students will be required to join. More sites and log-on instructions will be added throughout the year. Parents please join the first two.
Engrade (Parents/Students)
On engrade you can look up your child's test scores and see upcoming, late, or incomplete assignments. I have already created accounts for all my students so you can just go ahead and Login. The username and password is the student's first and last name with no spaces or capitals. If this does not work, please add a 2 after the first and last name for both the username and password. Parents AND students should check in weekly.
Our classroom will be receiving monthly Scholastic Book Club order forms but the book ordering is now done online. If you/your child plan on ordering any books this year please register on scholastic. On the parent page, click the "Register" button in the "First Time Here?" section. Register for your own user name and password. When Prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code HBPT3. Please register using our class code, our classroom gets free books every time a parent orders!
Pearson Success (P/S)
Math tests will be completed every Friday online. A (4) is a score of 90% or above. If you score lower than a (4) you are allowed to retake the test ONCE. You must complete the tasks assigned to you by Pearson after every test. Students should already have accounts/know their username and password.

Math Practice (S)
Throughout the year students may be assigned math games which will be graded as if they were math worksheets. Students MUST reach certain levels or scores for each game and take a screen shot (command + shift + 3) of their success. This screen shot picture will represent the completed assignment. These screenshots should be saved in a folder on their desktop Saved As: Number-Category-Name of Game.
Free Rice (S)
Every student must maintain an account. Prizes will be given to top scorers in every category at the end of the year. Parents please follow these steps to create an account for your child.
Click "Sign up" - enter YOUR email address and create a username for your child - fill in his/her birthday. Please go to your email to recover your child's temporary password. - Log in as your child and change the password to something he/she can remember. Make sure you join our classroom by clicking on "Groups" at the the top and typing in Mrs. Wester in the Search box. Please Join. Your child now has an account.
Rosetta Stone (S)
Spanish practice on Rosetta. Students should already have accounts/know their username and password.
Go here to take reading tests. Every time you finish reading a book go to AR to take a quiz on it. You must earn 10 points per month.
Go here to see your child's progress on Accelerated Reader. Sign in using your child's username - the first letter of their first name and the first four letter of their last. Password: abc. Here you can keep track of what books your child is reading and how well they perform on their reading quizzes.
ePals (S)
Students will join the ePal global community. Our classroom will share videos with other classrooms around the world. Students will penpal with same age children in other coutries. All communications will be approved by teacher before they are sent/received.
Khan Academy (S) (optional)
Students can receive individualized math instructions. Their progress can be graphed/monitored. This is online tutoring. However, a gmail account is required. -- If you would like your child to join (highly recommended) please scroll to the bottom and click "add a coach." The coach ID is: hicxell.rodriguez@gmail.com.
Blogger (S) (optional)
Students can use blogspot to create web projects/web sites on various subjects throughout the year. However, a gmail account is required.
Vimeo (S)
Students will be using Vimeo to post original imovie projects on various subjects throughoutthe year. Prezi (S) LAUSD Kids (S) Wordly Wise (S)
Students will be creating online presentations for various projects throughout the year.
From this link students will be able to access their LAUSD email accounts and other LAUSD approved sites.
Accounts not necessary for this site. Students may go here to practice weekly spelling and vocabulary words.
